My Leicestershire History

This site is a free and fully searchable online repository of photographs, films, sound recordings, and books about the history of Leicester and Leicestershire.  The extensive online collections include:
•  BBC Radio Leicester – The BBC Radio Leicester Sound Archive comprises over 2,000 spoken word programmes broadcast between 1967 and the digitisation of the station in 2001
•  East Midlands Oral History Archive (EMOHA) – The first large-scale archive of oral history recordings for Leicestershire & Rutland
•  Ghost Signs of Leicestershire – A ghost sign is a hand-painted advertisement that has been preserved on a building for an extended period of time
•  Gorrie Collection – A selection of political memorabilia of Archibald Gorrie (c.1885-1941) relating to the Labour movement in Leicestershire in the period c.1889-1909
•  Historical Directories – A collection of 50 trade and street directories for Leicester and Leicestershire dating from 1790s to 1910s. This collection also includes directories for Rutland, Derbyshire and Northamptonshire.
•  Leicestershire Industrial History Society (LIHS)- The selection of items includes photographs, short films, and illustrated studies into aspects of Leicestershire’s industrial history. Currently the items reflect the quarrying, coal mining, lime, power, boot and shoe, hosiery, railway transport, wind milling and agricultural industries
•  Manufacturing Pasts – This collection contains sources relating to the history of manufacturing in Leicester
•  Manufacturing Pasts – Learning Resources – A collection of free to use learning resources relating to Leicester’s manufacturing history. Resources are based on factories such as Liberty Shoes, N. Corah and Sons, D.Byford and Pex, as well as oral histories from company staff and local residents
• Media Archive for Central England (MACE) – A selection of films relating to Leicestershire
• Rothley Heritage Trust – A collection of digitised materials digitised including historical postcards, estate plans and churchwarden accounts
• Rothley Garden Suburb – This collection contains plans for houses that were to be part of the “Rothley Garden Suburb”. A model suburb proposed in and around Rothley at the turn of the 20th century
• University of Leicester Special Collections – A selection of books and maps from the University of Leicester Special Collections
• Vanished Leicester- More than 1000 photographs of streets and individual buildings in Leicester demolished between 1955 to 1975, mainly as a result of the postwar slum clearance programme, but also in connection with other developments. Arranged in alphabetical order of street names, with relevant district noted.
