The State Library's collection contains over 5 million items including more than 2 million books, 1.2 million microforms, 1.1 million photographs, as well as newspapers, maps, architectural plans, manuscripts and other items. Some of the services offered include an online catalogue, manuscripts and pictures search, research guides, family history help, Ask a librarian and access to e-Recources for all residents of New South Wales.

eResources offers free home access to 168+ subscription databases. For access you need to register as a State Library client online. You can use an existing New South Wales public library card or apply online for a State Library of New South Wales card which will be mailed to you.

• Arrivals (19th Century). Passengers and ships arriving, mainly in Hobart. Contains surnames A-N, O-Z to be added
• Births (1803-1933). People born in Tasmania including some baptisms collected by the Registrar General (1900-1933 baptisms only)
• Census (1837-1857). Householders in the 1840s and 1850s, not complete for all districts
• Convict permissions to marry (1829-1857). Convicts applying to marry free people or other convicts
• Convicts (1803-1893). Convicts transported to Tasmania and those convicted locally through the convict system

Search results can be filtered by record type, year, name, ship, departure port, place registered and census district. Any digitised records are identified and linked.

The National Library of Australia eResources offers home access to 128+ subscription databases. This free service is available to all residents of Australia. You need a National Library card and you can apply online. The card will be mailed to you within 5-10 working days. You then use the number on the card and your surname to login using the black box, top right of screen. Click on Licenced resources (yellow keys icon) to access an alphabetical list of available databases.

Trove is more than an enhanced search engine, it is a discovery service that helps you find and use Australian resources by searching across 458+ million items much of it digitised and available online for free. Learn how to use Trove to find unexpected and unusual resources relating to your area of interest.

The Trove help centre has a series of short Trove help videos designed to help first time users and offer useful hints for experienced users. They cover Basic search, Exploring zones, Advanced search and Making lists.
