Discovery holds 32+ million descriptions of records held by The National Archives and 2,500+ archives across the country. Over 9 million records are available for download from this site. Use Discovery to search. Enter a surname in the search box and tick Available to download from the National Archives. You can refine your search results by Date, Subject or Collection. Digitised copies of the original records can be downloaded for £1.10 each or accessed on the commercial sites Ancestry or findmypast where indicated*. Records available include:

The National Archives (UK) Outward Passenger Lists for voyages departing the British Isles 1890-1960 (BT27) for Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, South Africa and USA detail 24 million+ records. The database covers many arrivals into Australia that are still unindexed here. Passengers listed include migrants, businessmen, diplomats and tourists. It is also available at Ancestry.com as UK Outward Passenger Lists, 1890-1960. These two commercial sites offer a range of subscription options.

IrishGenealogy.ie is a free family history website by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. The online data includes:
• Church records - access 3+ million pre 1900 Church of Ireland records for Dublin City, Kerry and Carlow; Roman Catholic records for Dublin City, the Diocese of Kerry and the Diocese of Cork & Ross and some Presbyterian records for Dublin. Free digital images online if available.
• Civil records - with Irish civil registration indexes from 1864 and non-Roman Catholic marriages from 1845. Search for births over 100 years, marriages over 75 years and deaths over 50 years. Free register images online for births 1864-1916; marriages 1870-1941 and deaths 1878- 1966 with marriages back to 1845 and deaths to 1864 to be added.
Note: The birth indexes from 1900 lists the mother's maiden name and exact date. The marriage indexes from 1882 lists the spouse’s name and exact date. If a free image is not available you can buy an uncertified photocopy of the certificate for research purposes only for Euro €4.00. You must apply by post and an application form can be Downloaded Here. Photocopies can be posted + €2.00 for postage overseas or emailed.

CastleGarden.org - America's First Immigration Center

Castlegarden.org is a free database developed and funded by The Battery Conservancy. It contains and makes available eleven million records of immigrants who arrived at the Port of New York from 1820-1892. It was succeeded by Ellis Island in 1892.

This database lists 25+ million arrivals to the USA (1892-1924). A search returns name, nationality, residence, arrival and departure details, age and marital status. Access to digital copies of the original passenger lists requires registration (free). Fees apply to purchase digital copies of the ship manifest or a photograph of the ship.

This collection of passenger lists is fully indexed with digital images available. It contains 16+ million names from the Board of Trade (BT26) passenger lists of ships arriving in the United Kingdom from foreign ports outside of Europe and the Mediterranean, 1878-1888 and 1890-1960. Information listed may include: name of passenger, birth date or age, occupation, port of departure and arrival, date of arrival, vessel name and from 1922 onwards, intended UK address of each passenger. Bremen Passenger Lists 1920-1939

This is a joint project by the Bremen Chamber of Commerce and the Bremen Staatsarchiv. All passenger lists, 1875-1908, were destroyed due to lack of space in the Bremen Archives. All the other lists were lost in World War II, except 3017 lists for 1920-1939. These lists have been indexed and digitised. A searchable database of 690,952 entries and transcripts of the passenger lists are online for free. This site offers several search options. Many of the passenger lists are linked to photos of the ship plus historical details about the ship.

Ancestry.com - Hamburg Passenger Lists 1850-1934

This database covers 1850-1934 (gap 1915-1919). Digitised images of the passenger lists are available. Currently 1877-1914 have been electronically indexed though there is access to handwritten indexes 1855-1934. Both sets of records are in German.
Ancestry also has some free indexes available. These include:
• Wuerttemberg, Germany Emigration Index (in English). It lists 60,000+ persons who applied at Wuerttemberg to leave Germany from the late 18th century to 1900
• Brandenburg, Prussia Emigration Records (in German). A collection of government records relating to emigrants from Brandenburg in the 19th century
• Baden, Germany Emigration Index, 1866-1911 (in English) lists 28,000+ persons who left Baden.
A variety of subscription options is available for access to a vast collection of worldwide databases, many relevant to shipping and immigration.

The site includes lists of departures from the German ports of Altona, Bremen, Bremerhaven, Cuxhaven, Geestemunde, Hamburg, Stettin, Swinemunde (now Swinoujscie, Poland) plus unspecified ports.
